This is a fun spin on basic the spaghetti night. In this recipe I’ll show you how to create delicious and easy meatball parmesan bake. This recipe is on the top of the kid lover list with two thumbs up and is requested regularly in my home.

Rich and Delicious

SWITCH UP YOUR SPAGHETTI NIGHT

I love making meatball parmesan because the meatballs come out moist, cheesy, and delicious. This dish is one of the kids’ favorites. This bake will easily become your go-to spaghetti and meatball night. My 6-year-old Malcolm loves this dish. He always asks “can you make the spaghetti and meatballs that I like”! The answer is an easy, “yes”! I often make chicken parmesan, so switching it and making it into meatball parmesan is just as great.

KEY INGREDIENTS FOR MEATBALL PARMESAN

  • Mix of Ground Beef and Pork- These two meats mixed provide the best flavor. You can go with a different mix in like sweet Italian sausage as well. Once you try mixing your meats, you will never go back to using just one, unless you have to.
  • Quality jarred pasta sauce- There are many great jarred sauces out there. I like to buy one that I know is rich in flavor. One of my favorite go to jarred sauces is Jersey Italian Gravy. It comes out of the jar as if it were homemade. Other jarred sauces that I like; Classico, Barilla, Rao’s.
  • Extra can of roasted tomatoes- Adding an extra can of tomatoes to the sauce increases the moisture and flavor in the bake.
  • Provolone cheese slices- Provolone on the top has a great stretch factor. It also browns nicely. Other cheeses that you might like; mozzarella, shredded cheddar cheese or asiago.

STEPS FOR MAKING MEATBALL PARMESAN

  1. Heat oven to 375° f.
  2. In a medium sized bowl add ground beef, ground Pork, egg, onions, bread crumbs, and seasonings.
  3. With your hands mix all ingredients together.
  4. Use a spoon or an ice cream scoop to measure your meatballs. Place one in your hands and roll until a ball is formed. You should be able to make 8-12 meatballs depending on the size.

*If you notice the meatball is not sticking together, you may need to add one extra tablespoon of breadcrumbs in the mixture.

  1. Heat 2 tbsp. of olive oil to medium heat in a large skillet.
  2. Once the oil is hot add your meatballs. Rotate them in the skillet so they brown evenly on all sides.
  3. In a 9×13 in glass baking dish add half of the jarred spaghetti sauce and one can of tomatoes, mix together.
  4. Place your meatballs into the baking dish.
  5. Cover the meatballs with the rest of the jarred pasta sauce.
  6. Add sliced provolone cheese and parmesan cheese to the top of the meatballs.
  7. Cover your dish with foil. Tint the foil in the middle so that the cheese does not stick.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes or until the sauce is bubbling. Remove the foil and broil on high for 5 minutes until the cheese is browned.
  9. Garnish with basil and serve over cooked spaghetti. Enjoy!

The good stuff!

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL MEATBALL BAKE

  • Keep you eye on the meatballs as you sear them. Make sure to turn them occasionally so that all sides get browned.
  • When using the broil feature, never leave the oven area. Broiling will brown your food very quickly, but you do not want to burn your food by walking away. You only need to broil for 3-5 minutes tops!
  • Tent your foil when you cover your bake. This will keep the cheese from sticking to the foil.

What makes a meatball fall apart?

Meatballs call for a binder like; eggs, milk, breadcrumbs or cheese. Too much or too little of a binder can make the difference. for example; Too many breadcrumbs and the meatballs will fall apart. Not enough breadcrumbs and they will not stick together.

What is a substitutions for Eggs as a binder?

This substitution measurement is for 1 egg; 2 tbsp. milk, 3 tbsp. plain yogurt, 1/4 c. ricotta cheese, 3 tbsp. unsweetened applesauce can all be in place of an egg.
